چکیده

The build-up of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere has caused concern about possible global climate change. As a result, international negotiations have produced the Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC), completed during the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The treaty, which the United States has ratified, calls for the “stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system.”

Predicting and evaluating the effectiveness ofocean carbon sequestration by direct injection

Direct injection of CO2 into the ocean is a potentially effective carbon sequestration strategy. Therefore, we want to understand the effectiveness of oceanic injection and develop the appropriate analytic framework to allow us to compare the effectiveness of this strategy with other carbon management options. Here, after a brief review of direct oceanic injection, we estimate the effectiveness...

Assessing the effectiveness of direct injection for ocean carbon sequestration under the influence of climate change

[1] This paper studies the effect of climate change on simulated efficiency of carbon injection at different locations and ocean depths using an Earth system model of intermediate complexity, ISAM-2.5D. Following the OCMIP carbon sequestration protocol, we carried out a series of carbon injection simulations. The ISAM results show that warming over the next 500 years under the IPCC S650 and WRE...

Sequestration of Carbon Dioxide Emissions

Background The world's oceans represent the largest potential sink for the carbon dioxide (CO 2) produced by human activities (anthropogenic CO 2). Already oceans contain the equivalent of an estimated 140,000 gigatons of CO 2. The ocean's natural carbon transfer processes span of thousands of years and will eventually transfer 80-90 percent of today's man-made CO 2 emissions to the deep ocean....

Model Simulations of Carbon Sequestration in the North- west Pacific by Direct Injection

The direct disposal of CO2 into the ocean interior represents a possible means to help mitigate rising levels of atmospheric CO2. Here, we use three different versions of an ocean general circulation model (OGCM) to simulate the direct injection of liquid CO2 near Tokyo. Our results confirm that direct injection can sequester large amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere when disposal is made at suf...
